1 – Hell Let Loose
At the pinnacle of historical shooters you can play in 2025 sits Hell Let Loose, a game that masterfully combines large-scale warfare with a painstaking dedication to realism, where one bullet is enough to end you, and firefights are as intense, engrossing, and scary as they come. This tactical first-person shooter (FPS) throws 100 players into sprawling, 1:1 scale battlefields inspired by iconic World War II locations like Omaha Beach and Stalingrad. It’s a game where success is not measured by individual kills but by coordinated team efforts, meticulous communication, and strategic resource management so that your team can set up the proper positions in key locations to push and defend according to the situation. The gameplay is brutal and unforgiving, with no HUD, no crosshairs, and a single, well-placed shot often being all it takes to end a life, and more often than not, you’ll have no idea where that shot that killed you comes from, and a burst from a hidden machine gun position is enough to wipe out a full squad.
For me, it’s Hell Let Loose’s commitment to historical accuracy that truly sets it apart. The game’s developers utilized archival footage, aerial photography, and satellite imagery to meticulously recreate battlefields and their landmarks, making each map feel like a genuine, living piece of history you’re playing in, and it’s fascinating to be playing and recollecting something you saw/read somewhere else. Every weapon, uniform, and vehicle—from the M1 Garand to the Panther tank—is a faithful recreation of its real-world counterpart.
I love Hell Let Loose, and it’s the best historical first-person shooter (FPS) I fall back on whenever I don’t feel like playing strategy games or wargames, because it tingles that exact part of my brain, but gives me a more action-focused, on-the-ground experience you cannot get anywhere else.
The Historial First-Person Shooter Genre Is Alive And Thriving In 2025
From the primordial cinematic spectacle of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault to the uncompromising realism of Hell Let Loose, this list showcases the incredible variety and depth of the historical first-person shooter (FPS) genre. These games prove that history is far from a dusty subject; it can be a living, breathing, and deeply engaging experience and that most of them offer a way to glimpse into a distant (and not so distant past) from the POV of those who were there, on the ground, risking life and limb for something greater than themselves. Whether you prefer a fast-paced, action-packed narrative or a slow, methodical simulation, there’s a title here that will let you not only witness the past but truly become a part of it.
