Your Summer Strategy Is Here, and So Are The Best Strategy Games!
With the summer sun blazing, and the beach days and outdoor adventures always ready at a moment’s notice, sometimes the better course of action is to cool down with a fresh Coke by your side and dive into a captivating virtual world of relaxation and mindfulness. I have gathered together 4 games I think are worth your free time and money, and are perfect for you to sit back, enjoy, and just relax for a couple of hours. This is the first entry of Strategy Summer!
ISLANDERS: New Shores
The Summer is the perfect time of the year to take time away from intense, high-stress strategy games. ISLANDERS: New Shores offers a refreshing change of pace, perfect for those long summer afternoons that stretch well into those warm evenings. Recently released, ISLANDERS: New Shores is a satisfying, minimalist strategy game about building cities on procedurally generated colorful islands, one building at a time. There’s no complex resource management here or aggressive opponents to worry about; the whole premise of ISLANDERS is to be a thoughtful experience about maximizing your score through intuitive, puzzle-like mechanics. There’s nothing quite like learning the existing combos between buildings and pulling off a multi-hundred-point combo in just one go. The game is also perfect for short sessions, as each of the game’s islands can be done in around 10 to 15 minutes.
Townscaper
Self-described as an instant town-building toy, Townscape allows players the capability to create idyllic sea-bounded towns. More of a toy than a traditional game, the whole premise behind Townscaper is to have you effortlessly create charming, colorful islands with just a couple of clicks. There are no goals, no scores, and no pressure. It’s all about building to your heart’s content. Want a massive town? Go for it. Want a small hamlet? Just do it. Maybe you even want a floating town? Well, give it a go and surprise yourself! The game is absolutely gorgeous, and if you’re someone like me, who lives in an old coastal town, you’ll come to appreciate the small details of Townscaper.
Dave The Diver
The utterly charming, and genre-bending masterpiece that is Dave the Diver managed to seemingly blend together fishing, RPG, roguelite, and tycoon management into a single, cohesive whole. By day, you dive into the mysterious Blue Hole, a constantly changing underwater chasm teeming with diverse marine life and ancient Lovecraftian secrets to fish and explore. By night, you prepare your catches and make them into delicious culinary delights in your sushi restaurant, as you work alongside your master chef to turn this fledgling restaurant into a restaurant empire. The strategic aspect of its management sim isn’t the most in-depth, and can’t really hold a candle to the nest game in this list, but it’s certainly one of the best summer experiences you can play right now, with its charming story and characters, addictive gameplay loop of fishing and management, and of course, the amazing underwater exploration of the Blue Hole.
Planet Coaster 2
To me, this is not only the perfect strategy summer game, but the best summer game, period. After the first game in the series perfected the art of digital rollercoaster creation, the second entry brought on board the idea of creating your own waterpark, and after buying it just this last Steam Summer Sale 2025, I have to tell you that this is an absolute blast of a management game. The in-depth park simulation, the capability to build both rollercoasters and waterparks, and the unparalleled freedom in creating and meticulously designing every single aspect of your park make Planet Coaster 2 my go-to strategy game for the Summer of 2025. Whether you’re a free play enthusiast or a fan of single player scenarios, there’s a bit for everyone here, and a massive active community, always willing to share their own creations with one another, makes Planet Coaster 2 the best management experience of the year.
Your Strategy Summer Awaits!
The Summer is that time of the year when all the worries of your day-to-day existence go away, and are replaced by a few months of heat and relaxation. It’s natural one might want to wind down a bit, step away from the more exciting real-time strategy (RTS) titles and nail-biting wargames, and trade them off for more laissez-faire experiences. This has been the first of several articles I’m planning on doing for this Summer Season, going over several games I think are
