6 – Broken Arrow
Slitherine’s and Steel Balalaika’s take on the formula that was pioneered by RUSE and popularized by the Wargame franchise is set to come out sometime during 2024. Broken Arrow is a large-scale, real-time modern warfare tactics game that will feature over 200 customizable units. The maps feel really big, and unlike Wargame and WARNO, there’s a real emphasis on urban combat, instead of big, open fields. This means that in Broken Arrow there’s actually a reason to make smart use of infantry and their tactics.
Having played the open betas earlier this year, I’d have to say that this is probably my most anticipated game of 2024, and I’m excited to see how well it fares against WARNO, a game that I considered to be the best Eugen has ever created.
5 – Tempest Rising
I’m not sure that Tempest Rising is coming in 2024, but after two very well-received demos, I would wager that things should be on their merry way for a not-so-long release date.
Tempest Rising is what you would get if the Command and Conquer series never ceased to exist and kept on being worked on until today. If the demo is anything to go by, Tempest Rising is set to be one of the best and most interesting RTS ever made. Each faction is going to play in their own unique ways and have their own separate campaigns. Besides, the units in the demo were so unique (like troops that control drones, imagine that!) that I can only imagine what the late-game ones are going to be like. To be fair, now that I think about it, Tempest Rising sounds more like Red Alert 2 than Command and Conquer.
4 – Commandos: Origins
Speaking of which, the Commandos series is getting its first entry in well over 20 years, with Commandos: Origins, being developed by Claymore Game Studios and Kalypso Media.
As the name implies, you’ll be leading the Green Beret, the Sapper, the Sniper, the Driver, the Marine, and the Spy from their very first day on duty. From the icy Arctic plains to the Eastern Front, you’ll be the one leading the daring raids behind enemy lines.
I cannot tell you how excited I am for the return of what was, at this point, one of my favorite franchises from when I was a kid, and one that got me interested in the Second World War in the first place.
3 – Planet Coaster 2
If you know me, you know that I love water parks, more than I love zoos, coasters, hospitals, and all manner of things you see being managed in tycoon games. So finally, after years of yearning for a game that would let me create my own waterpark, Planet Coaster 2 has announced that’s going to focus its second entry on the addition of… waterparks!
What a treat it’s going to be that the best game of its genre is going to have my favorite kind of park ride being the main new addition of the sequel.
It’s just a shame that the game is going to be released in the Fall of 2024… You know, after the Summer. I also love how one of the guys on the video called Planet Coaster 2 a “Creative Management Sim”.
2 – Armored Brigade 2
I believe that Armored Brigade is one of the best wargames ever made. It’s certainly one of my top 10 favorites. The fact that Armored Brigade 2 is being made is great enough. But the fact that’s doing the two things I most wanted out of it is just perfection: First, it’s keeping itself faithful to the first Armored Brigade, and keeping the basics intact (by basics I mean big maps, highly detailed weapon systems, order delays). Second, Armored Brigade 2 is going 3D, and to me, this answers all the pet peeves I had with the original, which were mainly related to how hard it was to judge the terrain from a top-down perspective, and the isometric view of the map made it even worse.
The team is also reworking the way infantry works to make the more useful and realistic and is adding a bunch of dynamic and linear campaigns.
Can’t wait to see the mods in this one.
