1 – Fights in Tight Spaces
If, in the early 2000s, the gaming industry was plagued by movie-game adaptations, these days, those are a rare treat I miss dearly (some of my best memories playing games in the PlayStation 2 and original XBOX era were with 5 out of 10 and 6 out of 10 movie tie-ins). However, one has to wonder how John Wick, the sleek, suit-wearing assassin, has become a global sensation, and we haven’t had a single high-budget video game about it? Guns, close-quarters combat? Bullet time? Spectacular and stylish presentation? Those are all the ingredients of a great video game!
Well, while we might still be on the waiting list for a proper title, I do have the second best thing! Dear reader, meet Fights in Tight Spaces, a turn-based deck-builder where you control a suit-wearing agent and are thrown into very sticky situations, in a cramped space, with several enemies going at it at once. The gameplay is based around making the most of your deck (you accumulate new cards every time you win a fight) by using superior positioning, using the enemy movements against one another, and using the environment to cave heads and break ribs. The game feels like a mix of Jackie Chan and John Wick, and it’s glorious. I’m surprised the game didn’t receive a lot more attention.
Conclusion
There you have it: a fine selection of the 10 best forgotten turn-based strategy games that you most likely never heard about because you were too busy playing the big hits. All jokes aside, every single game in this list, from Fights in Tight Spaces to Panzer Corps and Cyber Knights: Flashpoint are amazing in their own right, and they all deserve to shine a bit brigthers than they did, so if you have a couple of them hanging around on your Steam, Epic Games or GoG librabry, do go and give them a go, I’m sure you won’t regret it. As someone who has played all of them, I certainly didn’t.
