7 – WARCOM: Fortress Europe

Look, I’m not a fan of cartoony graphics, especially in historical settings, but if I can deal with the minifig artstyle of Field of Glory 2, I can deal with this peculiar artstyle choice of WARCOM: Fortress Europe, a real-time strategy wargame with a grand-strategic aspect to it that’s set in World War 2, and will have players fighting desperatly from Normandy to Berlin, all in a seamless experience, at any zoom level. And yes, for those of you asking, there will be supply lines, dynamic weather, terrain modifiers, destructible buildings, persistent forces, and experience and fatigue too.
6 – Kriegsspiel ~ 7 Years’ War

La Forge du Code is putting together the best 7 Years’ War game to date, with the game being the direct result of an adaptation of the rules of Kriegsspiel, the ancestor of modern wargames, into a real-time strategy game. In Kriegsspiel ~ 7 Years’ War, you command vast 100-square-kilometer battlefields where you possess zero magical telepathy with your troops. Instead, you rely entirely on physical horse-mounted couriers to transmit orders and bring back reports, meaning if an enemy patrol intercepts your messenger, your frontline regiments are fighting completely in the dark. But they’re still fighting, because even if you cannot see them, your officers and staff will be doing their best to overcome the enemy. Your field of vision is also limited to what your general can see, and one wrong order can spell the doom of your forces. If you’re looking for a wargamer’s wargame, be sure to wishlist this one.
5 – Grand Tactician: Napoleonic Wars (1792-1815)
Following up on their critically acclaimed American Civil War framework built with Grand Tactician: The Civil War, the Grand Engineer Corps are taking their formula to the Napoleonic era with Grand Tactician: Napoleonic Wars (1792-1815). The game is set to feature Napoleon’s historically detailed campaigns, epic battles on a 1:1 scale, taking place in real locations, with battlefield topography lifted directly from where the battles took place, and historical units of infantry, cavalry, and artillery, all with their unique formations and tactics. Recent developer diaries have showcased a game that’s steadily being put together with great care, love and respect for the historical events it tries to portray.
