15 – Black & White 2 (2005)

A literal god simulator. You play as a deity with a giant creature that you must train. Your actions determine whether you become a benevolent god or a cruel one, which physically alters the appearance of your land and its creatures. A classic.

14 – Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 (2000)

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 is still one of my favorite games of all time. A fast-paced, campy take on the Cold War featuring Tesla coils, mind-controlling villains, and attack dolphins. It’s famous for its snappy gameplay and iconic live-action cinematics.

13 – Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (2002)

Warcraft 3 is one of the best real-time strategy games of all time, as is the title that paved the way for the MOBA genre. It blends traditional RTS base-building with “Hero” units that level up and gain abilities, set in a rich high-fantasy world that also birthed the biggest MMO of all time. Quite a legacy.

12 – Rise of Nations (2003)

Rise of Nations brilliantly combined RTS combat with “Territory” mechanics usually found in 4X and turn-based games. You can progress from ancient spearmen to Information Age stealth bombers in a single match. It’s like Civilization, but in real-time. Who didn’t love this one growing up?

11 – Civilization IV (2005)

Many fans (myself included) still consider Civilization IV the peak of the series. It’s a “4X” game (Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate) where you lead a nation from the Stone Age to the Space Age. It’s simpler and less game-y than the recent Civilization titles, or maybe that’s just my nostalgia getting the better of me.
