Top 10 Strategy Games For Beginners

7 – Bad North: Jottun Edition

By narrowing the scope to the defense of small, picturesque islands, Bad North: Jotunn Edition makes real-time tactics feel a lot simpler and easily manageable. You are only ever responsible for a few squads at a time, which makes the loss of any single unit feel significant, but lets you micromanage without becoming overwhelmed by it. The inclusion of a slow-motion command window is a vital feature for beginners, providing the necessary breathing room to react to incoming threats without feeling overwhelmed. The Jotunn Edition further eases the transition for newcomers by introducing a level restart option. This safety net allows for experimentation and learning from mistakes without the looming threat of a total campaign reset, making the Viking invasion much more palatable for the uninitiated.

6 – Halo Wars

Designed from the ground up for a console and controller, Halo Wars removes the traditional barriers to entry associated with real-time strategy. The use of circular menus and simplified unit selection shortcuts eliminates the need for high actions-per-minute, allowing players to focus on the actual combat. Its rock-paper-scissors unit hierarchy is exceptionally clear, ensuring that you always understand why a specific engagement was won or lost.

The base-building is equally approachable, utilizing fixed sockets that prevent the disorganized layouts that often plague new players in other RTS games. It is a streamlined experience that captures the essence of large-scale warfare without the baggage of overly complex mechanics.

5 – Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition

Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition remains the definitive blueprint for the real-time strategy genre. Its straightforward resource model and clear technological progression make it incredibly easy to grasp the “gather, build, and battle” formula that has defined the industry for decades. With a staggering amount of single-player historical campaigns and a robust skirmish mode, beginners have ample space to practice against the AI before ever considering the competitive online space. The Definitive Edition modernizes the experience with quality-of-life improvements that remove much of the old-school friction. It is a game that respects your time, offering a clear path from clicking on sheep to managing a multi-pronged siege of a fortified castle. New players usually enjoy themselves by adopting a turtling playstyle, and few other games are as great as doing that as Age of Empires 2.

Total War: Shogun 2 is a good entry point for beginners to the total war genre. The engine of the game is still relatively basic compared to the following entry. I have a friend who played Warhammer 3 has an entry point in the series and the prologue does a very good job easing in new players and familiarizing them with the numerous functions.

Romance of the 3 Kingdoms 8 or 13, i think if you start has kingdom less lord or has an officer of a lord, you can slowly learn the mechanic of the game and expand from there.

    1. Shogun 2 is a great suggestion, actually! Thank you!
