The 12 Best Wargames To Buy During The Steam Spring Sale 2026

8 – The Troop

The Troop is one of my favorite World War 2 wargames of all time, and it can be described as the best turn-based, platoon-level wargame in existence. The game features an incredible combat system, has that sweet aesthetic of Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan, and features dozens of missions, incredibly detailed units for German and Allied troops, and takes place in everybody’s favorite World War 2 setting: D-Day and Normandy!

7 – The Great War: Western Front

Wargames, and games in general, set in World War 1 are quite a rarity. That seems unlikely to change anytime soon, and I cannot recall a single game on the horizon that’s going to take place between 1914 and 1918. If you really need to jump into the trenches of the Somme, pick up The Great War: Western Front, which is the closest thing to a tactical real-time tactics wargame that’s decent, and also has a Total War-style grand-strategy layer on top. I personally enjoyed what’s on display, and for just 6 bucks, it’s super worth it. Have in mind that development of the game appears to have ceased, so don’t go into it expecting support or future DLCs.

6 – Burden of Command

When I reviewed Burden of Command, I claimed it became my favorite World War 2 wargame of all time, and that still holds up pretty strong, almost a year later. Most games on this list focus on testing your military acumen and tactical prowess, but Burden of Command changes the whole formula by putting your leadership abilities to the test. It’s no longer just about who has the better weapons, is better equipped, or better trained. It’s about making the right choices, keeping morale up, and making the toughest life and death decisions. It’s as much an RPG as it is a Wargame.

5 – Headquarters: World War 2

Headquarters: World War 2 is a recent wargame that’s accessible, good-looking, and can toe that middle line between arcade and realism. It’s turn-based, fast-paced, has a great single-player campaign, and most of all: it’s super fun.

  1. I’ve got 8 out of the 12 games already (missing 1, 2 and 7 and 11; 2 on purpose as I don’t have time for the steep learning curve). That being said, if 11 (Combat Mission: Black Sea) is anything like the other Combat Mission games, stay away. I bought CM: Red Thunder during the sale and returned it after half an hour. The game’s graphics are horrible to the point that it is unplayable. I am sure there is risk of getting eye cancer. What I am not sure of is where they got the graphics they show on store page, but it looked nothing like that for me. I went instead for Mius Front, which looks much better.

  2. HQ WW2 is essentially a better version of Battle Academy (BA2), I wouldn’t recommend both except on price point. Excited HQ Cold War is out though only small launch discount.

Ugghhh… At least 9 of these, maybe 10 (unsure about Radio General), are set in WW2. Are video game studios aware that literally ANYTHING else in history has ever happened? Just like books, TV, movies… The WW2 fixation is just so painfully tired at this point.

    1. There are two RGs. One is Vietnam and one WW2. But I think the one recommended here is the WW2 one 😆

      1. Yeah, there the Vietnam Version is called Radio Commander, available both to Mobile and PC via Steam. This Radio General Is not familiar to me though the mechanics seems to share the same concept.
