8 – The Troop

The Troop is one of my favorite World War 2 wargames of all time, and it can be described as the best turn-based, platoon-level wargame in existence. The game features an incredible combat system, has that sweet aesthetic of Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan, and features dozens of missions, incredibly detailed units for German and Allied troops, and takes place in everybody’s favorite World War 2 setting: D-Day and Normandy!
7 – The Great War: Western Front
Wargames, and games in general, set in World War 1 are quite a rarity. That seems unlikely to change anytime soon, and I cannot recall a single game on the horizon that’s going to take place between 1914 and 1918. If you really need to jump into the trenches of the Somme, pick up The Great War: Western Front, which is the closest thing to a tactical real-time tactics wargame that’s decent, and also has a Total War-style grand-strategy layer on top. I personally enjoyed what’s on display, and for just 6 bucks, it’s super worth it. Have in mind that development of the game appears to have ceased, so don’t go into it expecting support or future DLCs.
6 – Burden of Command

When I reviewed Burden of Command, I claimed it became my favorite World War 2 wargame of all time, and that still holds up pretty strong, almost a year later. Most games on this list focus on testing your military acumen and tactical prowess, but Burden of Command changes the whole formula by putting your leadership abilities to the test. It’s no longer just about who has the better weapons, is better equipped, or better trained. It’s about making the right choices, keeping morale up, and making the toughest life and death decisions. It’s as much an RPG as it is a Wargame.
5 – Headquarters: World War 2

Headquarters: World War 2 is a recent wargame that’s accessible, good-looking, and can toe that middle line between arcade and realism. It’s turn-based, fast-paced, has a great single-player campaign, and most of all: it’s super fun.
