The 10 Best Real-Time Strategy (RTS) Games To Play In 2026

4 – Broken Arrow: Modern Warfare Perfected

Broken Arrow has redefined the scale of modern tactical combat, instantly making one of my favorite strategy games, as noted in my review. Featuring over 300 real-world units and a deep customization system for your battlegroups, it moves away from “APM-heavy” clicking and toward deep, systemic decision-making. The interplay of electronic warfare and long-range artillery makes every match feel like a genuine modern conflict. The game is finally adding a save game feature for those of you who couldn’t play the campaign without it!

3 – WARNO: The Hardcore Commander’s Choice

For the wargamers who demand realism, WARNO continues to dominate the tactical sub-genre. The “Army General” campaigns are now the gold standard for operational-level strategy, allowing you to manage the entire invasion of Western Europe before diving into brutal, real-time tactical engagements. It is a game of combined arms, logistics, and terrifying lethality.

2 – Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition – The Eternal King

It is 2026 and Age of Empires II: DE is still a top-tier contender. With the launch of the The Last Chieftains expansion this month, which introduces the Mapuche, Muisca, and Tupi civilizations, the game has reached an unprecedented level of depth. Its longevity is a testament to perfect mechanical balance and a community that is more active now than it was five years ago. What makes it an essential play this year is the sheer volume of its historical library. With dozens of civilizations and hundreds of campaign missions, it is the most complete strategy package ever assembled. As I noted in my Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Review, the game’s longevity is a testament to how World’s Edge has treated it so well.

  1. I was expecting Gates of Hell: Ostfront to be #1, but it’s on the list at all! what the heck man 🙂

  2. Has anyone else played Broken Arrow? Just went to Steam and 51% recent positive reviews looks abysmal…

    1. Ya i have played it. Is pretty bad very glichy. Lots of hackers and the community is pretty much dead. Warno the next game on the list is similar and much better

  3. Good list but I could not get into Tempest Rising. I absolutely hate the fact that you can buy the enemy faction’s units.

    1. You don’t have to, though.

  4. Microsoft needs to do Urban Assault 2026

  5. Beyond All Reason is without a doubt has the most granular, intuitive, and sophisticated control system of any RTS. It’s disappointing to even play some of these other games without the ability to control and issue orders as well as you can in BAR. It’s literally a free game with three well developed factions and hundreds of maps.its been my go to for years now.

  6. They need to bring back Total Annihilation. Still the best RTS of all tine.

  7. […] you’re looking for something more mainstream, you can check my recent breakdown of the 10 best real-time strategy (RTS) games to play in 2026, or the top 10 must-try strategy games demos for the Steam Next Fest […]
