The 10 Best Real-Time Strategy (RTS) Games To Play In 2026

7 – Beyond All Reason (BAR): The Open Source Phenomenon

Born from the Total Annihilation lineage, Beyond All Reason is a community-driven masterpiece that everyone always tells me about whenever I write something for the website. It offers a scale that AAA studios rarely touch, with thousands of units clashing across entire regions that look like continents. The “Strategic Zoom” is still the best in the business, allowing you to go from a single bot to a global view in a heartbeat, but the meat and potatoes is on the lively multiplayer community that’s constantly running tournaments and looking for new players to join its ranks.

6 – Age of Mythology: Retold – A Content Powerhouse

The true strength of Age of Mythology: Retold lies in the staggering volume of its base game content. This isn’t just a remaster; it’s a total reconstruction of the 2002 classic. The base experience features the legendary 50-mission “Fall of the Trident” campaign, which has been visually and tactically overhauled to include modern pathfinding and the new “Wonder Age” mechanics. Following Arkantos from the walls of Troy to the underworld and the snowy peaks of Midgard remains one of the most cohesive narrative journeys in RTS history

5 – They Are Billions: The Survival Gold Standard

Even years after its release, They Are Billions remains the definitive “Horde Survival” RTS. In 2026, its influence is seen everywhere, yet nothing quite matches the tension of managing a steampunk colony where a single infected breach can end a four-hour run. It is punishing, rewarding, and remains an essential install for solo strategy fans.

  1. I was expecting Gates of Hell: Ostfront to be #1, but it’s on the list at all! what the heck man 🙂

  2. Has anyone else played Broken Arrow? Just went to Steam and 51% recent positive reviews looks abysmal…

  3. Good list but I could not get into Tempest Rising. I absolutely hate the fact that you can buy the enemy faction’s units.
