1 – Field of Glory 2 & Field of Glory 2: Medieval
I don’t think it makes a lot of sense to try to separate these two, because if you own one, I’m of the firm opinion you should also, at least, consider buying the other, because you might just uncover a new interest in History! Published by strategy-darling Slitherine, Field of Glory 2 and Field of Glory 2: Medieval are turn-based strategy games, with FOG2 being set in antiquity, and FOG2: Medieval taking place during the titular period. Both games are, in my opinion, the most realistic representations of the outcomes of real battles.
With hundreds of units and factions, and a “time-travel” feature that allows players who own both games to create skirmish matches between Ancient and Medieval nations, there’s a lot of experimentation and “what-if” scenarios for players who enjoy that. Each game also has its grand-strategy counterpart, in Field of Glory: Empires and Field of Glory: Kingdoms. And the answer is “yes, they’re really good, and yes, you can play the grand-strategy aspect of the game and also play the turn-based battles as well”.
Conclusion
I hope you have thoroughly enjoyed this trip down two of the most fascinating periods in human History and have found several new games to be itnerested in. From the all-time classics of Age of Empires and Total War to the most recent titles from solo developers like Strategos and Manor Lords, there’s a lot to experiment with and enjoy: Commanding vast medieval kingdoms to shaping the fate of ancient civilizations, strategy games are, in my opinion, the best and most tangible way to connect with the distant past.
