My 15 Suggestions Of Strategy Games To Buy During The Steam Winter Sale 2025

Introduction

We’re back to our favorite time of the year: the Holiday Season. In this list, we’re going over why I think these are my favorite picks for you to get during the Steam Winter Sale 2025. I have several other lists on the website about years prior, which should be cool too for you to check out if you want more ideas. I’ll be releasing more in-depth guides about specific sub-genres in the following days as well. But right now, these are 15 suggestions of strategy games to buy during the Steam Winter Sale 2025 that’ll keep you busy for months to come!

The Steam Winter Sale 2025 runs from 18th December until January 5th.

15 – Tempest Rising

Tempest Rising just came out in 2025 and quickly rose through the ranks to become one of the best strategy games of 2025. Taking direct inspiration from 90s and early 2000s real-time strategy classics like Command & Conquer, Tempest Rising delivers fast-paced action with base-building, a memorable single-player campaign, excellent graphics, and the kind of unit design you’ll only find in a game that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The game just unveiled its third faction and new superweapons, so it’s the perfect time to get it and start playing it.

14 – Phoenix Point

If you’re a fan of XCOM and Xenonauts and are looking for the next best thing, you can’t go wrong with Phoenix Point. This 10-dollar turn-based marvel was created by the crafty hands of Julian Gollop, the mastermind behind the original XCOM. The gist is the same, but Phoenix Point trades outer-space aliens for underwater creatures and allows players to take their own shots and to target individual body parts, making for some great boss battles.

13 – Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition

Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is the best way to play the best real-time strategy game ever made in 2025. If you don’t own Age of Empires 2 or never played it, you really owe it to yourself to do so. The Definitive Edition has amazing graphics, an updated UI, and keeps the perfect gameplay loop that Age of Empires 2 managed to achieve during the 90s. Added new content, and the game has a very active multiplayer community, plenty of updates, and new DLCs arriving every couple of months. It’s the best real-time strategy of all time. What more do you need?

12 – They Are Billions

Do you enjoy the act of turtling in a strategy game? You know, that thing we all did of trying to use the game to create the perfect fortress, or just ridiculously impractical and expensive defenses so that we could sit back and watch the AI send wave after wave of units, and there was absolutely no way they could ever get through? They Are Billions takes that concept and builds an entire game around it. It’s an RTS where you act as commander of a town that needs to expand and evolve, all the while keeping the hordes of zombies at bay. How do you do that? By building a massive, multi-layered, filled-with-redundancies defense system! Oh, there’s also a surprise for you. If one single zombie gets through and infects a building in your town, every villager living there becomes a zombie as well, and the whole thing will get out of hand really fast. It’s one of the best real-time strategy games ever made, and it’s always a blast to play, with its single-player campaign and difficult challenge missions.

11 – Dune: Spice Wars

Dune: Spice Wars is a 4X real-time strategy game from the team that worked on the excellent Northgard, and it’s the best Dune game you can play in 2025. Expect the average 4X experience of exploring, conquering, fighting, researching, all that good stuff, but instead of being done in turns, stuff happens in real-time.

  1. Nice list. However, I don’t agree with Age of Empires 2:DE being so low on the list! I tried TW:3 but didn’t care for it. I think I’ll give Song of Syx and They are Billions a try, thank you for suggestions!

    1. Crazy on not caring for TW:W3 im also biased since I spotlight its modding community

      1. I know. But I have to admit I was surprised when I found out it was a top selling game of the year when it came out! Insane the numbers the Warhammer franchise can pull.

    2. I understand that! But I had to changes things around, otherwide Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition would always be number one ahahahah

  2. I would pass on Company of Heroes 3 as there’s a game breaking bug in the Allied campaign that spawns invincible enemy infantry units on the map. These basically block your progression and the developers have no intention of ever fixing this.
