The Best Strategy Games To Buy During the Slitherine Winter Sale

1 – Starship Troopers: Terran Command

To be completely honest with you, I don’t think you’ll be able to find a more interesting, unique, and high-quality real-time strategy game campaign in 2025 other than the one in Starship Troopers: Terran Command. Not only is the game one of the best RTS games of all time, but it has one of the best single-player campaigns, too. The game perfectly encapsulates what it would be to command the Mobile Infantry: it’s all about positioning, making the best use of your lines of fire, and creating kill zones to funnel the arachnids into. The game also manages to do the 1997 movie aesthetic justice in every regard, from the cinematics to the voice-overs, all the way to the individual soldiers’ uniforms. If you can only get one game on this list and you enjoy real-time strategy, get Starship Troopers: Terran Command; you won’t regret it.

Conclusion

With December upon us, it’s no surprise that we are going to be witnessing a staggering amount of video game sales, and there’s usually no better time than right now to stock up on new games to play well into the Holiday season. From some of the most hardcore wargames with War in the East 2, to the best Warhammer 40.000 strategy videogame ever made with Battlesector, one of the best space 4X with Distant Worlds 2 and even the best RTS of the last decade with Starship Troopers: Terran Command, there’s plenty of choice, no matter what kind of strategy sub genre you enjoy the most.

  1. While I agree that War in the East 2 is very complex and an excellent design, I would not agree on “most realistic”. There is always a problem when people equates details with realism with no additional context.

    1. I think that at that scale, it is. Any other game you think does it better?

      1. In my opinion Decisive Campaigns Barbarossa does it better, albeit only focusing on the opening stages. As for War in the East, the ultra detail level does indeed make it slightly unrealistic. Beside the argument that at the core its combat system is lanchestrian due to its tracking of individual vehicles, I am not persuaded that a game covering the whole front has to go down that level to be realistic. At OKH/Stavka level you will receive data on the combat effective status of armies and corps, and possibly record division positions. Yes both supreme leaders loved to meddle in the details so you can have divisions. But certainly a step strength approach rather than the obsessively count of individual vehicles would have made the game more realistic. As I said detail does not automatically equate to realism. At this scale I think Clash of Arms War Without Mercy, GMT The Dark Valley, and Avalon Hill Russian Front does it better. If you want divisions XTR/Compass Proud Monster/The War In Russia are also valid alternatives.

      2. Thank you so much for your recommendations! Those are some amazing suggestions and I’m sure the readers will appreciate them!

  2. Terminator dark fate defiance is such a challenging but immersive strategy game.

    1. It is indeed. Such a great RTS. I’m glad Slitherine is able to do this kind of game. Can you imagine if Starship Troopers: Terran Command and Terminator: Dark Fate- Defiance had come out in the early 2000s? They would be considered classics today!

  3. Picked up all FoG2 DLCs. I have already played both FoG2 and its grand strategy brother, FoG: Empires before, but this great cut in price has finally convinced me to make my collection complete. Couldn’t agree with you more, it is the only battle simulator of the era it represents that comes close to being accurate.
