5 – Civilization VII
Sid Meier’s Civilization VII, the highly anticipated next chapter in the legendary 4X turn-based strategy game series, is a centerpiece of the Steam Summer Sale 2025. Released in early 2025, this new strategy game had a rough launch, as it attempted to redefine some of the basics of the series’ empire building with a revamped three-age structure. Similar to Civilization V and Civilization VII before it, I have no doubt in my mind that in a couple of months it’s going to emerge as a great title, as the other did after a rough launch as well. Players are clearly buying it in droves, so if you want to experience its innovative features like flexible leader selection, dynamic “Age” transitions that reshape your strategy, and new unit types such as Commanders, Civilization VII is the game for you.
4 – Hearts of Iron IV
Ah, the first game I have ever reviewed: Hearts of Iron IV (HOI4). Developed by Paradox, it is the definitive World War II grand strategy game, with its competition not even managing to come a bit closer in terms of its scale and complexity at a World level. Hearts of Iron IV (HOI4) lets players lead any nation through World War 2, and manage all of its political and military infrastructure: from deciding which strategic political moves to advance, to industrial planning, technological research, and military organization. Players can choose to start the war, avoid it, or carve their own path while other nations are involved in it. Build vast armies, design custom divisions, and execute strategic maneuvers across land, air, and sea. Supported by its deep modding community and continuous official updates, including new content like the “Graveyard of Empires” pack earlier this year, Hearts of Iron IV is a great way to create your alternate history of the Second World War, and the Steam Summer Sale 2025 is the perfect opportunity to grab the base game and its extensive collection of DLCs.
3 – Total War: WARHAMMER III
The final and cataclysmic entry of the Total War: Warhammer trilogy came with Total War: Warhammer III, a top-selling real-time strategy (RTS) game that offers an unparalleled look at the world of Fantasy Warhammer. The unique faction design comes back, with each one playing massively different from one another, having their own mechanics, abilities, units, and goals. Players can decide to either stem the advancing forces of Chaos by leading the Cathay against the monstrous legions of Daemons, or embrace the destruction of the setting by laying waste to the land with Khrone, Tzeench, Nurgle, and Slaanesh. 2 – Stellaris
In the number two spot, we have Stellaris! Paradox Development Studio’s highly acclaimed sci-fi grand strategy game. Stellaris is the kind of game that everybody just loves, offering an unparalleled 4X experience where you explore vast star systems, expand your empire, exploit resources, and exterminate rival civilizations in ways that are so ridiculously evil that they become hilarious. With the recent major “Phoenix” (4.0) update in May 2025 and the accompanying BioGenesis expansion introducing new ways to interact with life and planets, the game is more dynamic and immersive than ever. Players can create unique alien species, engage in complex diplomacy, build and design their space fleets, and navigate emergent galactic events that ensure every playthrough tells a unique story. The number one spot is reserved for a personal favourite of mine, and it’s great seeing other players think alike! Welcome Crusader Kings III (CK3), Paradox Development Studio’s multi-award-winning grand strategy RPG, a game that’s the closest we are ever going to get to a true medieval political experience where you don’t just rule a nation – you guide a dynasty, with all that it entails. If you watched Game of Thrones, you know what I mean. Crusader Kings III (CK3) is a unique blend of intricate character-driven and emergent storytelling with deep strategic decision-making at a wider level, allowing you to marry for power, scheme against rivals, raise armies, and shape your family’s legacy across generations.
