The topic of morality in video games is a touchy subject. This isn’t helped by the constant controversial topics video games have always been involved in: in the 90s it was Mortal Kombat, in the 2000s it was Grand Theft Auto, and more recently Call of Duty. When most strategy games are centred around the idea of conquest and warfare superiority, from someone on the outside it’s easy to misinterpret what they’re seeing and discount them as violent fantasy.
We, at the Critical Moves Podcast wanted to discuss if it’s important for video games to have morals and if it’s important for gamers to keep their moral standards while playing.
Should video games be a place where you can experiment at will with the most terrible aspects of human nature to better understand them, or should touchy subjects be avoided? Please have a listen and let us know what you think!
