Introduction
I’ve been getting more and more into the colony simulation genre lately. Colony sims have long been a fan favorite of the gaming world: notoriously difficult to master, breathtaking when everything goes amazingly well, and incredibly engrossing and long-lasting. There’s no better time to jump into Colony sims, as the genre has some of the best games the strategy genre has ever seen, and some of these could even be considered for some of the best games ever made, period. The journey won’t be easy, the road to mastery is perilous and filled with dangers, but the end goal of knowing a game like the ones in this list inside out is like nothing you have ever felt before. Join me for a voyage to discover the 10 best colony sims to play in 2026!
10 – Infection Free Zone

Let’s start with one of my favorite colony sims of the last few years: Infection Free Zone earns its spot on this list for being a game that finally makes the zombie trope into something interesting with its unique “real-world” hook, and being somewhat accessible to get into. Unlike other colony sims that drop you into a fictional sci-fi world or a fantasy setting, Infection Free Zone allows players to enter the name of their actual hometown and start their colony right in their own backyards. The fact that things match up almost 1 to 1 with what you know is such a surprise, and it allows players to put into practise the scenarios they had in their heads of “I’m sure I could survive this with proper planning”. Well, now you can simulate that, which is the second-best thing!
9 – Whiskerwood

Whiskerwood puts players at the helm of a working force of mice who are under the guise of their tyrannically feline overlords. Published by Hooded Horse, this Early Access colony sim manages to blend aesthetics with surprisingly deep management systems. Players guide a band of mouse settlers as they establish new colonies to meet the ever-growing demands of their bosses. At its core, Whiskerwood is a logistics-heavy city builder that focuses on meeting quotas. Despite its cozy presentation, survival in Whiskerwood is anything but relaxing. Harsh weather, pirate threats, and strict taxation from your feline masters constantly pressure your economy. Balancing the needs of your mice with the demands of the “Claws” creates a tense strategic loop that’s great for players who love managing complex production chains and optimization.
8 – Space Haven

If you’re looking for a space colony sim, you’re not necessarily starving for options, and the real challenge is in finding out what you enjoy the most. I think a serious case can be made for Space Haven to rank high on your choices. A game that’s also approaching a full release in 2026. Bugbyte’s beautiful masterpiece tasks players with building a spaceship tile-by-tile to save their crew from the vacuum of space. Whether you’re managing oxygen levels (if you are, keep reading, you’ll enjoy an up-and-coming entry), fending off pirates, or simplydecorating your crew’s quarters to keep their mood up, Space Haven provides that sense of “cozy sci-fi” that most players love. Of course, the challenge lies in creating the best space station with the available resources, managing your crew to make the best you can out of their special skills, and avoiding dooming the whole crew with poor oxygen management. It goes on sale for less than 10 dollars quite often. A worthy deal for one of the 10 best colony sims to play in 2026.
7 – Farthest Frontier

Farthest Frontier has become a gold standard for semi-historical colony sims thanks to its incredible detail, graphics, and depth. Developed by the veterans at Crate Entertainment (previously worked on Grim Dawn), this colony sim manages to be both visually stunning and mechanically deep, and still offer plenty of customization into how players want to tackle the challenge of creating a new town from scratch on the untamed wilderness- these options can make the game a walk in the park, or turn it into a brutal diceased-ridden survival affair, with the first being perfect for those still learning the ropes of the genre. The game came out of Early Access in October 2025, and currently sits at an enviable 86% Steam Very Positive rating with over 20.000 reviews.
6 – Songs of Syx

Songs of Syx is quickly rising through the ranks of colony sims as one of the best fantasy-set games of this genre of strategy. A marvel of technical optimization, the game allows players to grow a colony from a dozen refugees to a sprawling metropolis of over a dozen thousand citizens. Not even Dwarf Fortress or Infection Free Zone allows for this kind of scale. And yet, it’s expected of the player to take care of every small detail of their ever-growing metropolis, and a poorly made decision can quickly spiral supply chains out of control, dooming the entire city to chaos and oblivion. While most colony sims do feature some kind of combat, no other game allows you to have battles of up to 50.000 individual units. Just for comparison, that’s way bigger than an average Total War battle, which might feature between 3.000 to 5.000 soldiers. There’s a very good demo available if you want to give it a go.
5 – Timberborn
I was surprised to learn that Timberborn came out in Early Access in 2021. Time does fly when you’re having fun. With its official Version 1.0 release in March 2026, it has firmly established itself as an absolute fan-favorite amongst those who love complex sims. The game’s premise is simple: players lead a colony of industrious beavers to survive in a world plagued by cycles of devastating droughts and toxic “badtides.” The game has a unique focus on vertical architecture and forces players to master water physics and terraforming to bend the environment to their will, and allow for the colony to thrive even when things have gone sour. As beavers do. What beavers don’t do is develop fully automated societies with beaver bots. Just a couple more days and you’ll be able to. When the 1.0 version of Timberborn goes live, it will become, by bar, one of the best colony sims of all time.
