Why I’m Playing These 10 Short Strategy Games Between Work and Family Life

Introduction

Let’s be honest: we aren’t teenagers anymore. Gone are the days when I could sink 12 hours into a single Hearts of Iron session without checking the clock. Now, between running Strategy and Wargaming, managing a career, and the tactical complexity of ‘folding laundry,’ my gaming time is a precious resource. But being a ‘busy adult’ shouldn’t mean sacrificing deep tactical satisfaction.

After 25 years in the trenches of the strategy genre, I’ve curated a specific library of what I call ‘Micro-Strategy’ titles. These aren’t just ‘casual’ games, they are deep, complex experiences that respect your time. Whether you have a 20-minute lunch break or a brief window before the next diaper change, these are the 10 games I personally keep installed to ensure I get my tactical fix without the 100-hour commitment.

10 – Grit & Valor – 1949

If you’re looking for a strategy game built for short, intense play sessions that’s minimalist yet still delivers some thought-provoking strategy, I highly advise you to take a look at Grit & Valor – 1949. Each mission is designed to be completed quickly (5 minutes, at most, except boss fights), but they demand your full attention, because the gameplay is all about smart positioning, knowing what’s the best situation to use your mechs, and creating a team build that’ll last for the rest of the campaign. The mechanics are streamlined, the objectives are simple, and there’s a high degree of replayability. In my review, I even called it “a minimalist RTS for your downtime“.

9 – Mini Motorways

Mini Motorways has always been one of my favorite games for quick gaming sessions since it first came out in 2021. It’s also one of the games I have always installed in every machine I own for this specific reason: to boot it up whenever I feel like I want a familiar, quick, and satisfying gaming session no longer than 10 minutes. The gist of it is rather simple: the player is given a limited number of road pieces (roads, roundabouts, traffic lights, highways), and has to connect any emerging housing districts with shopping districts of the same colour. Let traffic accumulate, and the game will come to an end. It’s intuitive, so easy to just pick up and play, and the randomized nature of its map generation will keep this one fresh for ages. Better yet, you’ll find yourself developing more and more effective strategies to manage traffic and reach higher and higher scores. By far one of my favorites on the list.

8 – Thronefall

Thronefall is a streamlined strategy and base-defense game designed perfectly for the idea of having quick gaming sessions. The game blends city-building, limited resource management, and tactical combat into compact rounds that can be completed in just a couple of minutes. Players must carefully balance building and upgrades with defensive positioning, making each decision important, but they’re not overwhelming or complex, and the game keeps things relatively simple across the board, allowing for a fast-paced city-building aspect and an even faster combat section. Of course, later rounds of the game can become a bit hectic, but that’s to be expected. If my recommendation isn’t enough for you, the game’s currently sitting at a 96% overwhelmingly positive rating on Steam, making it one of the best games on the platform.
