1 – Starship Troopers: Terran Command
For the number one spot on this list, I wanted to shake things up a bit and showcase one of my favorite real-time strategy games of the last decade: Starship Troopers: Terran Command. Published by Slitherine, it’s the most faithful rendition of the Starship Troopers movie from 1997 I have ever seen, and while it might be more of a traditional tactics-based RTS, the essence of commanding the mobile infantry is still on fighting overwhelming hordes of space bugs, and no other game manages to do it so perfectly. Amazing graphics, a fully realized campaign with narration, dynamic objective, and a near perfect adaptation of the franchise’s themes to game mechanics (such as positioning, overlapping fields of fire, to combine arms), Starship Troopers: Terran Command is one of the best singleplayer RTS we have seen in a long time, and equally exciting as one of the best horde survival real-time strategy games to play in 2026.
Conclusion
Horde survival RTS games are ultimately all about pressure, and the slow, creeping realization that no defense, no matter how imposing and well-built, might be truly enough, and that preparation is the only thing standing between survival and total annihilation. The best games in this genre don’t just throw enemies at you; they force you to think, adapt, and learn from failure, like They Are Billions and Infested Planet. Infection Free Zone will challenge you to test your mind scenarios. Starship Troopers will have you struggle as a true mobile infantry commander. If you’re a fan of turtling, base defense, and watching impossible odds slowly tilt in your favor, this list should keep you busy for a long, long time.
