1 – Europa Universalis 5
Europa Universalis 5 crowns 2025 with Paradox’s most ambitious grand-strategy game to date, expanding its iconic formula with deeper nation-building, richer diplomacy, and a fully overhauled world simulation that changes every aspect of the game. Its new population and trade systems add untold new strategic layers of nuance that make managing your empire a lot more complicated, but a lot more rewarding. In my very favorable review of Europa Universalis 5, I praised the game for starting a bit early, during the 14th century, its introduction of the new population mechanics, colonization, military, the Estate systems, and the inclusion of tools to automate most parts of Empire management to help ease new players into this massive ocean of historical possibilities. I think it’s fair to say that most people were anxious about the release of Europa Universalis 5, after the poor reception Victoria 3 and Cities: Skylines 2 got, but fortunately, Paradox Tinto delivered and created the most expansive and best historical grand-strategy game ever, quickly rising to become one of my favorite historical games of all time. It’s the most polished, immersive, and forward-thinking entry in the series, making it the undeniable strategy game of the year. I happily award Europa Universalis 5 the Strategy Game of the Year 2025.
Conclusion
