If you’re like me and skipped Phantom Brigade when it came out because it was a little barebones, you’re missing out. With the 2.0 release soon arriving, Phantom Brigade is going to be one of the best turn-based strategy games you can play in 2025. It delivers a visual identity unlike any other tactics game, blending sleek mech designs with a signature “predictive” combat visualization that plays out like a stylized action film. Its minimalist UI, crisp terrain detail, and clean color palette make battles easy to read, while the real-time execution phase transforms firefights into slow-motion spectacles of missiles, particle trails, shattering cover, and smoothly animated mech maneuvers. The game’s blend of tactical clarity and cinematic flair gives every encounter a dramatic, high-tech look, cementing Phantom Brigade as one of the most visually unique strategy titles of the modern era. The game is so clean-looking it feels like a very smooth painting; it’s so satisfying.
4 – Wartales
By the looks (ah, “the looks,” get it?) of this list, I have a clear fascination for painted art styles, and Wartales captivates me tremendously with its rugged, almost fantastical world, featuring a smooth but detailed look to every small thing that turns every region into a hand-crafted medieval landscape filled with atmosphere and texture. From fog-soaked forests and windswept plains to dilapidated villages and torchlit camps, the game’s environments feel grounded and lived-in, reinforcing its harsh, low-fantasy tone. Character models and gear are rendered with impressive detail, while combat animations, weather effects, and dynamic lighting add cinematic weight to each encounter. Its art direction strikes a perfect balance between realism and stylization, making Wartales one of the most visually distinctive tactical RPG–strategy hybrids available today, and one of the best turn-based strategy games you can play in 2025.
3 – Sins of a Solar Empire 2
Sins of a Solar Empire 2 not only elevated the series’ gameplay to a whole new level, but it equally elevated the visual identity of the beloved RTS/4X hybrid with some of the most striking space graphics the genre has ever seen. It is my favorite real-time strategy (RTS) of 2024. Powered by modern rendering tech, the sequel transforms interstellar warfare into a cinematic experience where colossal capital ships, dynamic particle effects, and vibrant nebulae fill every battle with dramatic spectacle.
What makes it truly stand out visually is how it blends grand-scale strategy with close-up detail. You can zoom from a system-wide perspective—complete with orbiting planets, starlight scattering, and realistic shadows—down to individual ship hulls showing heat discoloration, moving turrets, individual missiles being launched, and intricate faction-specific designs. Few strategy games make scale feel this tangible. Sins of a Solar Empire 2 is exactly what a sequel should be: a fantastic improvement all around, and one of the best RTS games ever made.
2 – Total War: Three Kingdoms
Total War: Three Kingdoms remains one of the most visually breathtaking entries in the franchise, blending grounded historical aesthetics with elegant, painterly touches inspired by classic Chinese art, no wonder it became one of the best selling strategy games of all time. Even the UI reflects this. Its battlefields burst with life—rolling fog, sweeping grasslands, vibrant forests, and dramatic seasonal lighting bring the Three Kingdoms era to vivid reality. Unit models are intricately detailed, from ornate armor to flowing banners, featuring all the pomp and circumstance a tale as epic as the one being told here needs, with hero duels filled with awesome cinematic animations that turn otherwise run-of-the-mill clashes into memorable set pieces. With its refined campaign map, dynamic weather, and rich color palette, Three Kingdoms delivers a strategy experience as beautiful as it is grand, with an art style that perfectly encapsulates the culture and time period it’s trying to evoke.
