1 – Empire Earth
We are finally at the coveted number one spot! I think that one day, Empire Earth will get a similar list or article of its own. In the history of RTS (Real-Time Strategy), there’s no other game that might have been as innovative and as groundbreaking as Empire Earth in terms of scale. Age of Empires II was an epic historical title, but Empire Earth is an epic RTS that takes the historical progression of Age of Empires to an extreme level. Spanning 500,000 years across 14 distinct epochs, you start with ancient spearmen and can end with futuristic cyborgs and mechs. This massive scope alone was enough to set the game apart and put it on a whole new level compared to all other real-time strategy (RTS) games at the time. The fact that it did all of this in 3D and the game still holds up very well to this very day is proof enough that if you’re looking for a traditional real-time strategy (RTS) experience in the vein of Age of Empires II, you cannot go wrong with Empire Earth.
