2 – Ultimate General: Civil War
This is an entry for those of you who might never have heard about Ultimate General: Civil War because I’m sure every wargamer out there with a passion for the American Civil War already has it, and also its predecessor: Ultimate General: Gettysburg. So, for the unaware, Ultimate General: Civil War is a tactical real-time strategy game set during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Players engage in over 50 premade battles, from small skirmishes with a couple hundred men to large-scale engagements with tens of thousands. It’s also the first game in the Ultimate General series to feature a campaign, with its progression being directly influenced by player choices and battle outcomes. The game emphasizes historical accuracy and features authentic orders of battles, realistic battlefield unit modelling, and battlefields based on historical maps. A unique, very smooth command system allows for both individual unit control and high-level strategic sweep movements. The most impressive part of the game is its AI, which can be set to act in several different ways, depending on the challenge you’re looking to get out of it.
1 – Combat Mission Black Sea
I doubt we will get a video game about the Russian invasion of Ukraine anytime soon. The closest thing we have to being able to wargame that conflict is in the format of a very well-known strategy game called Combat Mission Black Sea. This is a detailed, turn-based tactical wargame simulating a fictional conflict in Ukraine during the summer of 2017. As part of the acclaimed Combat Mission series, it emphasizes realistic military tactics and detailed unit behaviour, this time in a modern setting very close to us. Players command (mostly) company-level formations of US/Ukrainian or Russian forces across varied pre-built scenarios and campaigns. The Combat Mission series is known for its in-depth simulation of factors like ballistic, weapon systems, movement, morale, line of sight, communications, and command and control. I love the Combat Mission series, especially the World War 2 ones, but I have recommended those enough, and with this one currently featured in the Steam Wargames Fest, Combat Mission Black Sea offers a challenging and authentic modern tactical warfare experience at 60% off, and I think this is the cheapest Combat Mission Black Sea has ever been.
