Top 5 Strategy Games To Get On The Steam Wargames Fest

What Is The Steam Wargames Fest?

Finally! The wargamers among us are getting some Steam love, with the first ever (I think) Steam Wargames Fest! This week-long event (April 28th to May 5th) on Steam offers incredible discounts on various wargames, from grand strategy and real-time tactics to historical simulations and futuristic battles, and even some first-person shooters. I guess Steam’s definition of a wargame is very similar to mine! You got to love it! So, join me and let’s bolster your digital battlefield library with 5 of the best wargames you can get on the Steam Wargames Fest. If you’re a fan of military strategy games and leading virtual armies, don’t miss the Steam Wargames Fest for fantastic deals and exciting new titles!

5 – DEFCON

I have never recommended DEFCON, in all of my time writing here, I think. For no particular reason, I just forget, but I clearly shouldn’t! Inspired by the movie Wargames, DEFCON is a strategy game simulating global thermonuclear war during the Cold War. Players are tasked with one mission only: annihilate enemy populations while protecting their own. You’ll do this by mobilizing your nuclear silos and submarines, to cause the most amount of damage, forcing the enemy to wield, or face extinction. Its minimalist interface and rising casualty numbers are a grim reminder of how DEFCON is the wargame that truly embodies the famous saying “War isn’t about who’s right, it’s about who’s left” – quite literally, in this case.

4 – Gates of Hell – Ostfront

Gates of Hell – Ostfront, one of the best real-time strategy games (RTS) you can play in 2025 is currently on sale, at the Steam Wargames Fest, for less than 10 dollars. Set on the Eastern Front of World War II, Gates of Hell: Ostfront is a historically focused real-time tactics game very much in the vein of Men of War, even making use of the same engine. The base game gives players some of the most intense and brutal battles between the Soviet Union and Germany from 1941 to 1945. Other, more recent DLCs added the Winter War and the Allied Invasion of Normandy. What’s great about Gates of Hell – Ostfront is the amount of content it has, with dozens of missions, hundreds of historically accurate and detailed units, authentic ballistics, and a dynamic cover system that works like a charm! There’s a massive multiplayer community, which is also extremely active, and one of the most vibrant mod scenes in 2025.

3 – Sea Power: Naval Combat In The Missile Age

Not only is Sea Power: Naval Combat In The Missile Age, one of the best strategy games you can get on this Steam Wargames Fest, but one of the best 100 strategy games to play in 2025. From the lead designer of the amazing submarine light-sim, Cold Waters, Sea Power: Naval Combat In The Missile Age focuses on modern naval conflicts between NATO and Warsaw Pact forces during the Cold War era. It made quite an impression on the maritime wargaming scene when it came out, in late 2024, and that was mostly due to its ease of use, amazing attention to detail (the amount of weapon systems to track is absolutely mind-boggling), and its spectacular graphical fidelity, something seldom seen in a wargame this “hardcore”. In my review I was so impressed, it made me go out and learn some of its weapon systems to better enjoy it. There’s an amazing roadmap for it, and being under the umbrella of MicroProse, I’m sure this one is going to massively deliver. The discount isn’t huge, but the game potential certainly is.
