September started out great! Age of Mythology: Retold is an amazingly faithful recreation of the original 2002 game that plays like a charm. Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 is out now, and people are having a blast with it. Concord went down in flames, teaching Sony a lesson that designing games and characters by committee can lead to over 100 million dollar loss. There’s a lot to go over this week, from new games to big updates, so let’s get started!
But, before you go: I would love for Strategy and Wargaming to go ad-free, and if you would like to support me with that, you can subscribe to my Patreon for a measly 3 dollars a month, or buy me a coffee for a dollar or a couple if you’re feeling generous. If you can’t, no worries, Strategy and Wargaming will always be free!
Angola 86 Is Out Now On Steam
Every Single Soldier has released a new game called Angola ’86, which zooms into the South African Border War. You’ll act as a South African Defense Force commander and wage a counter-insurgency (COIN) war to secure the border with Angola.
From the looks of it, Angola ’86 will follow the formula popularized by previous titles from Every Single Soldier like Vietnam ’65 and Afghanistan ’11, where your focus isn’t on just destroying the enemy, but also securing the region, training local forces, cooperating with the local inhabitants to gain their trust. Every Single Soldier’s game is a niche of their own, so if you like the idea of conquering the hearts and minds of the general population instead of territory, their games might be the for you.
Every Single Soldier is also working on Rhodesia ’72 and Vietnam ’66, both games that are taking their formula and expanding it to other wars. Angola ’86 costs $12.99 | 12,79€ | £10.99.
Scourge of War – Gettysburg Finally On Steam
After the release of the excellent Scourge of War – Waterloo Remastered, it’s finally time for Scourge of War – Gettysburg to finally make its way to Steam. This real-time strategy title borders more on actual historical simulation rather than on the gaming side. The Steam page description doesn’t let us know a whole lot, but from the looks of it I think there aren’t a lot of improvements, at least when compared to their recently released Scourge of War – Waterloo Remastered, but they did bring “some of the upgrades into the older engine. A big performance boost as well as Steam multiplayer. We also got it out as soon as we were able which was what we heard time and again.”
Scourge of War – Gettysburg costs $44.99 | 43,99€ | £37.99, and Scourge of War – Waterloo is still one of the best wargames you can play in 2024.
Headquarters: World War 2 – Market Garden New Details
Slitherine’s new take on the Second World War, Headquarters: World War 2 is already getting its first expansion set during the Market Garden Operation. The developing team behind the game announced the 8 missions out of which the British campaign will be composed:
1. Road to Valkenswaard
2. Liberation of Eindhoven
3. Liberation of Nijmegen
4. The Battle of Son
5. The Waal Crossing
6. The Elst Assault
7. The Battle of Highway 69
8. Operation Berlin (Arhnem)
Unlike other games, the Headquarters: World War 2 – Market Garden campaign isn’t focusing on the paratroopers who dropped behind enemy lines, instead choosing to follow the British ground troops tasked with reaching them.
Kaiserpunk Delayed To 2025
One of 2024’s most antecipated strategy games Kaiserpunk is postponing its release from the 3Q of 2024 to 1Q of 2025, the 27th of February to be more precise. In an unprecedented move rarely seen today, the developing team has decided to forego its Early Access period because they believe “it wouldn’t do justice to the full vision of Kaiserpunk“.
I have to applaud their honesty and commitment to their craft and to delivering a great experience, but I’m also very disquieted as to what the final product will be because the game’s mix of genres might be a massive selling point, but it might also spread the team’s effort too much and too thin.
Burden of Command Moral and Leadership
Will Burden of Command feature in Strategy and Wargaming Guide to Computer Wargaming someday? Burden of Command will come out between December and February.
Starship Troopers: Terran Command Free Challenge Missions
One of the best RTS of the last decade, Starship Troopers: Terran Command is getting 2 new challenge missions for the Urban Onslaught DLC. The first one has you defending the city of Mahanagar against the Bugs, and the second will have you command your troops to dislodge the Bugs that have taken a liking to the Mahanagar power plan.
Starship Troopers: Terran Command is currently 40% off on sale and it will cost you $17.99 | 17,39€ | £14.99.
Professional Wargaming Documentary
Tally-Ho Corner Tim Stone spotted a fascinating documentary about Wargaming on YouTube. It sounded a bit too preachy for my liking, but it’s well made and worth a watch if you want to understand how video games are used as tools to practise for war.
Worth Watching Video – Usually Hapless
Usually Hapless is a Combat Mission focused Youtuber who creates a lot of informative content on the game, and his latest Making of a Community Scenario is a must watch for everyone who wants to improve their map-creation skills.
